Summary

No one believes in them。 But soon no one will forget them。

It's 1889。 The city is on the cusp of industry and power, and the Exposition Universelle has breathed new life into the streets and dredged up ancient secrets。 Here, no one keeps tabs on dark truths better than treasure-hunter and wealthy hotelier Séverin Montagnet-Alarie。 When the elite, ever-powerful Order of Babel coerces him to help them on a mission, Séverin is offered a treasure that he never imagined: his true inheritance。

To hunt down the ancient artifact the Order seeks, Séverin calls upon a band of unlikely experts: An engineer with a debt to pay。 A historian banished from his home。 A dancer with a sinister past。 And a brother in arms if not blood。

Together, they will join Séverin as he explores the dark, glittering heart of Paris。 What they find might change the course of history--but only if they can stay alive。

From New York Times bestselling author Roshani Chokshi comes The Gilded Wolves, a novel set in Paris during a time of extraordinary change--one that is full of mystery, decadence, and dangerous desires。。。

I’ll be real, I read this book in a absolute DAZE during finals and AP testing and can’t really recall much except the low fantasy setting was cool and allowed for analysis of race, class, and gender in an impactful way, the characters were great (a little bit Six of Crows but not an egregious rip off), and the writing was alright。 Great length with slightly off pacing at times but I’d rather a book speed run at bits than drag on too much。 Three and half stars (rounded up) and I’ll probably rea I’ll be real, I read this book in a absolute DAZE during finals and AP testing and can’t really recall much except the low fantasy setting was cool and allowed for analysis of race, class, and gender in an impactful way, the characters were great (a little bit Six of Crows but not an egregious rip off), and the writing was alright。 Great length with slightly off pacing at times but I’d rather a book speed run at bits than drag on too much。 Three and half stars (rounded up) and I’ll probably read the sequel。 。。。more

It was alright in terms of worldbuilding and character development。 I didn't love the plot, I didn't really care for the ending。 I did like the heist bits。 My biggest issue was the audiobook narrator who read for Severin and Enrique。 He sounded like a robot doing a Shatner impression。 It was alright in terms of worldbuilding and character development。 I didn't love the plot, I didn't really care for the ending。 I did like the heist bits。 My biggest issue was the audiobook narrator who read for Severin and Enrique。 He sounded like a robot doing a Shatner impression。 。。。more

This book is set in 1889, during the Exposition Universelle, a world’s fair held in Paris。 Much of the story is inspired by real history and it’s ugliness which is wrapped in glittering parties and champagne。 The Gilded Wolves is so good, I enjoyed it from the very beginning。 I love adventures, heists, mythology and vivid descriptions, this book delivered all of that! I had really high expectations for this one, but in the end, I was just really bored。 Things I did like: Hypnos。The diversity of the characters。All the characters were just undeniably cute。

The book had a Six of Crows vibe to it。 (Examples- Severin being mysterious, Laila searching for something) THE CHARACTERS The characters were amazing。 Each of them had their own hopes, dreams and personalities。 Enrique being flattered at being the bait was so adorable。 He had a good rapport with everyone。 Both Zofia and Hypnos are a good match for him。 I loved how all Severin wanted was them all being together。 He could give them more than just something to tide them over until the next acquis The book had a Six of Crows vibe to it。 (Examples- Severin being mysterious, Laila searching for something) THE CHARACTERS The characters were amazing。 Each of them had their own hopes, dreams and personalities。 Enrique being flattered at being the bait was so adorable。 He had a good rapport with everyone。 Both Zofia and Hypnos are a good match for him。 I loved how all Severin wanted was them all being together。 He could give them more than just something to tide them over until the next acquisition。 He could give them enough to stay。I liked the fact that his fathers are named after the seven deadly sins and each of them gave a valuable lesson that he should always remember。 Zofia is amazing。 She can think quickly on her feet and is always making something new。 I love the way her mind works。 I loved the banter between Zofia and Hypnos, I wish we'll get more of those。 “What would friendship entail?” “Well, on Wednesdays, we sacrifice a cat to Satan。”Laila is the mother hen of the group。 She looks after them and makes sure they eat。 She calls Severin Majnun but I don't think Severin knows about Laila-Majnun。 His reactions to her dance was absolutely humorous。 Tristan- We didn't have a Tristan's pov so I'm not sure how his mind worked but I did feel bad for him。 Laila's thoughts about him and what he did kind of creeped me out。 Hypnos is adorable。 He just wanted friends。 Even when he severin told him he would be bait, he was happy having friends。 His banter with the rest of the group proves that he can get along with them and would be a wonderful addition to the group。 Note- Hypnos and Enrique comparing walking sticks。 😂 Why I didn't give 5 stars? ---->During the heist, I felt like there was a communication gap between them? Laila knew about the poison but tristan who was supposed to be in the garden didn't know and didn't have an antidote。 And it was never acknowledged or talked about afterwards。 --->The rest of her had been lifted from a child’s grave。 Laila's body wasn't hers。 She doesn't have a problem with that。 What about the parents and relatives of the other child? It's cruel to them。 Did they ask for permission or something? It's messed up and no one bats an eye about it。 --->The Forging。 It's never explained clearly how the magic system actually works。 How are things Forged? I do hope it's more clear in the second book which I'll definitely pick up soon。 。。。more

I couldn’t keep listening to the audiobook even though I was interested in the story。 The male narrator’s style made me seethe with anger。 Is he a robot or did someone tell him to read every sentence like the headline of a news story? It was so bad。

I’m very glad to say that this book blew me away! All of the characters were three dimensional and entertaining。 I’ve seen other people say that there was no plot but I thought the conflict and chain of events was strong。 My main criticism is that the fight/action scenes were a bit passive and I never got the feeling like I was in the edge of my seat as I do with most books。 My only other critique is that I wish Tristan had a bit more of a role to play。 He was always pushed aside, babied by the I’m very glad to say that this book blew me away! My favorite part of this book was its characters。 They were diverse, well flushed out, and each had stories that really pulled at my heartstrings。 Personally, I felt that the plot was just a little cliche。 I predicted a few twists and the final showdown felt like other things I had read before。 The magic system was different and interesting but I found it to lack a little sense sometimes。 These faults don’t mean that it wasn’t an exciting read。 I really liked the setting of late 19th century Par My favorite part of this book was its characters。 They were diverse, well flushed out, and each had stories that really pulled at my heartstrings。 Personally, I felt that the plot was just a little cliche。 I predicted a few twists and the final showdown felt like other things I had read before。 The magic system was different and interesting but I found it to lack a little sense sometimes。 These faults don’t mean that it wasn’t an exciting read。 I really liked the setting of late 19th century Paris and the obviously complex puzzles that Roshani Chokshi created for her characters to solve。 This is an extremely well written book that I would suggest for a quick weekend read during some relaxing indoor weather。 。。。more

3。5 starsOh man, that ending is the only reason I’ve requested the second book from my library。 Before all those twists and cliffhangers in the last few chapters I was ready to leave my experience with just The Gilded Wolves。This is a fantasy that lovers of historical fiction and heists will devour and demand more of。 It is opulent, richly diverse and creatively fantastic。 I loved how magical this book was- it will take a reread to fully appreciate this world, I think- but I had a hard time with 3。5 starsOh man, that ending is the only reason I’ve requested the second book from my library。 Before all those twists and cliffhangers in the last few chapters I was ready to leave my experience with just The Gilded Wolves。This is a fantasy that lovers of historical fiction and heists will devour and demand more of。 It is opulent, richly diverse and creatively fantastic。 I loved how magical this book was- it will take a reread to fully appreciate this world, I think- but I had a hard time with just how historical the setting was。 This is a personal preference, obviously, but there was so much going on for each character that it got to be very distracting。 I didn’t quite warm up to this crew of misfits either。 I enjoyed their distinct personalities, but I didn’t feel attached to any of them, aside from Tristan- hence why I am so eager to read the next book now。 The plot seemed to move at a strange pace until about halfway when it suddenly became frantic with the mechanics of the actual heist。 I also still have a problem with how the author describes her scenes。 In previous books of hers, I’ve often felt whiplash and disorientation because scenes will inexplicably jump around and characters will turn up where they weren’t。 I had the same problem with this book。 The scenes aren’t fluid, which affects the pacing and my own internal sense of where the story is。 It just gets a bit confusing。 However, like I stated at the start, I’ve been enticed by the events at the conclusion。 I’ll be reading the next book, and hopefully a better relationship with these characters will blossom from it。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book, I absolutely love Laila and Zofia with all of my heart。 I also have a feeling that Séverin’s character arc is going to just be *chefs kiss。* The only thing was that the plot was hard to follow and I think some repetition of character motivations and worldbuilding would have been useful, I just felt very detached from the story。 But overall, it was great and I can’t wait to read the second one!

The thing about authors that write books for different age groups is that you can always count on surprises while still feeling a sense of familiarity。 That is what happened with me and Roshani Chokshi – I loved how she wrote Aru Shah and the End of Time and when I found out that she wrote a YA mystery fantasy book, I just had to read it。 Now, I want to add a sort of *disclaimer* before we begin: This book has nothing to do with Six of Crows! Before reading the book, I already disliked seeing how people compared the two book series to each other even though they had almost nothing in common。 After reading, I cannot simply tolerate it。 Yes, this book has the heist trope and the found family trope but Leigh Bardugo was neither the first nor the only person to write books with these two specific tropes。 The fact that Six of Crows has now been labelled as top tier does not make up for the fact that all books featuring heists or found families have to be compared or have been inspired by Six of Crows and Leigh Bardugo’s books。 It pisses me off tremendously because I literally found nothing in common: the plot is different, the characters literally nothing to do with each other and I could go on and on about how these books series are different。 Putting that aside, let’s begin with the actual review。 The story focuses on six main characters: Séverin, Laila, Enrique, Zofia, Tristan and Hypnos。 Each of these characters has unique talents and characteristics that set them apart from each other while still completing the circle。 I will get into the characters in a minute。 But first: the plot。 The story begins with the gang (1。 they really aren’t a gang and 2。 all of them minus Hypnos) performing a heist – or, as the gang calls it, “acquisition” - that consists on obtaining an object that is not theirs。 However, the object belonged to Hypnos and when Hypnos forces Séverin to make an oath in which Séverin and his gang have to help him acquire a certain object crucial to Hypnos, belonging to the Order of Babel – the Horus Eye。 From that point forward, Hypnos slowly integrates the gang and they all join forces to achieve the common goals and to overcome the obstacles thrown their way。 Séverin has been personally impacted by the Order’s conspiracies and, throughout his life, there has been one thing constant in his mind: vengeance。 However, vengeance can only take you so far before you start losing what is most important to you。 One of the things I admire in Aru Shah and the End of Time is the description and how Roshani describes the world building, and The Gilded Wolves was no exception。 One of the best things of this book is how well the author described the world building and the story itself。 I will not bother you with the description of the world and what the gang does because I do believe that is part of the magic in this book。 However, I can say that this world does an amazing job joining aspects of the biblical world with a renew take on magic and fantasy and these two things (the biblical aspects and the fantasy created by the author) are perfectly balanced。 However, if the readers are not fans of religious aspects or have difficulty in reading stories that feature these kinds of balances, they might feel lost at times。 As I mentioned before, each character has unique talents that distinct themselves from each other while still managing to complete the gang, including Hypnos。 They all diverse in their background which makes the whole story better。 The different ethnicities, backgrounds and personal experiences add insight。 This story does NOT revolve around differences in ethnic or racial terms but it does bring a much needed fresh life。 These characters will full of qualities and flaws, the multi-dimensional aspects add to the plot a much needed complexity, typical of the real world。 Séverin is who we can say is the leader – he has the wealthy resources and a sharp mind perfectly designed to create and execute heist plans。 Growing up being betrayed by the Order of Babel did not set lightly on Séverin and throughout his life, he picked up skills that clearly benefit him。 Laila has the ability to read an object’s story, including the people who possessed it, and it has such a kind heart that shines throughout the entire story。 In my opinion, Laila is the glue that sticks the gang together。 Enrique would be me。 I just know it。 A historian that every once in a while reminds himself that he should be an active member of society and it so unapologetically sarcastic that you might be confused if they’re flirting with you or annoyed at you。 Zofia has a talents for maths and has a rare affinity。 Her love for fire would be borderline concerning if we did not know that every move she makes is calculated。 It is not specified in the book but I’m pretty sure Zofia is autistic – the way she acts, talks, thinks is so typical of autism and I was so glad to have read a book where autistic person was represented well。 Tristan has an envious talent for botanic, reserve but such a sweetheart。 He is clearly the baby of the group and no one can tell me otherwise。 If I could hug him, I would have – unless his tarantula was around, which more often than wanted。 Finally, Hypnos is one of the most straightforward characters I had the pleasure to meet in YA。 He is unapologetic himself。 Sarcastic and sassy all in the same pot who flirts with everything that moves but has a soft heart。 People are quick to underestimate him because of how “all over the place” he appears to be。 The author’s ability to make you feel and visualize things is unbelievable, especially because she is so underrated。 The descriptive language, decorated with beautiful yet simple phrasings, has to be one of my favourite things about her writing。 She truly made The Gilded Wolves a compelling story that pulls you in completely until all you see is yourself emerged into the story, wishing you could hug, laugh and cry with these characters。 Without being overbearing, the author brings sensitive but necessary issues to the table, such as colonialism, exploitation and ethnic/racial related issues。 By addressing these issues, Chokshi shows her ability to tell one’s struggles without it being what defines them or the book。 The ending was heartbreaking, although I figured it out since the beginning due to a specific thing that Chokshi did – or rather, did not do – throughout the book。 Clearly, it was intentional and I prepared myself for it but, still, it was heartbreaking。 This is the only reason why I did not give it a 5 star rating。 The *actual* ending – as in, literally the last page, ends abruptly with a promising new conspiracy and, yet again, a complex and compelling plot in the second book。 If you never read a book by Roshani Chokshi, you don’t know what you’re missing。 。。。more
